An Essay on Jawaharlal Nehru

I explicated an essay for a 6th grade student on Jawaharlal Nehru. I visited a few websites and finally ended making this. Go ahead.....

Nehru’s Early Life

The architect of modern India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad. His father, Moti Lal Nehru was a great lawyer and his mother was Swarup Rani. Nehru’s initial education was completed at home. But at the age of 15, he was sent to the most expensive school Harrow in England. He completed his higher studies in London’s famous Cambridge University. Later he studied Law and became a lawyer. He began his practice at Allahabad High Court.

Political Role

Jawaharlal Nehru’s political career began in 1916. He set up the National Planning Commission with himself as its first Chairman. His aim was to improve the standard of living of the people, to better their quality of life. Under him the first Five Year Plan was launched in 1951. He very carefully prepared the road-map of India’s industrialization. He became the first Prime Minister of Independent India.

A great Activist

Jawaharlal Nehru was a staunch socialist and believed in equality, freedom and brotherhood. His concern for the untouchables, the weaker sections of the society and the right of women was uppermost. It was he who launched the “Panchayati Raj” system. He propagated the “Panch Sheel” for international peace and harmony and made India an important country among the developing countries of the world.

Children’s Favourite

Every year we celebrate his Birthday on 14th November as Children’s day. Nehru loved children, and they affectionately called him “Chacha Nehru”. He worked great for the wellbeing of children as well as youngsters after the independence of India.

A Prolific Writer

Nehru authored a number of books, such as  ‘The Discovery of India’, ‘Glimpses of World History’, and his autobiography, ‘Toward Freedom’.  He had written 30 letters to his daughter Indira Gandhi, when she was 10 years old. The collection of these letters was later published as a book ‘Letters from a Father to His Daughter’

An Honoree

In 1955, Nehru was awarded Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. Numerous public institutions and memorials across India are dedicated to his memory. A commemorative stamp was released in 1964 as a humble tribute.

End of an Epoch

Jawaharlal Nehru passed away on 27th May 1964. Yet the ideals for which he worked and the values for which he stood will abide for all time to come. Let us keep alive his torch, which he lit for the freedom and progress of the country, and unswervingly follow the path, which he has lighted for us. May his memory remain evergreen with us - an inspiration for achieving the goal, which he has set before the country and the people.
